Jane's Walk Brock 2023 - Sunderland, May 6th, 2023
Thank you to everyone that participated in a very successful Jane's Walk 2023 in Sunderland.
A special shout out goes to the Sunderland and District Historical Society(SDHS) whom graciously hosted the tour this year providing insightful knowledge of the town's past( and delicious treats!), It was a gorgeous sunny morning of community camaraderie where many interesting stories were shared about various buildings throughout the town including the old Fire Hall, the old Nipissing Hotel, Dr. Oliver's house, the Town Hall, the Masonic Lodge, the Co-op and the old train station. Enjoy these pictures of some of the stops.

Blacksmith and Carriage Shop
The Blacksmith was an important person in a community before the advent of the car and other modern machinery. Blacksmiths made items out of iron, repaired items and sharpened blades. Farm implements, wagon parts, building materials, cooking utensils, cutlery, hooks and hinges, chains and bells were in their array of tasks.
Old Hodge Podge Building
Ralph Boake had the building built in 1948 and ran a cold storage facility out of the building, called Lakeshore Lockers. Farmers would take their slaughtered meats to the lockers for storage. I was also told that owning a fridge was rare and residents would rent out a locker to keep their food.
Rainbow Crosswalks and Steps in Brock Township
A crosswalk is a reminder to those of us with power to look out for the vulnerable people, to respect their right of way, and to let them pass unharmed.. To paint a crosswalk with a Rainbow is to show pride and celebration of local and visiting 2SLGTBQ+ communities.
The Blossom Trail
The Blossom Trail Project was commenced in 2017. It began with a group of environmentally-concerned citizens envisioning a Blossom Trail flanking the sides of a pathway in a public park. This has now become Beaverton
Park’s Blossom Trial.
The Cross
The Cross at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Beaverton had a new cross added in 2019 to represent and welcome those in the LGBTQQIP2SAA community.
Rainbow Crosswalk Unveiling
The three rainbow crosswalks were unveiled in 2019. This is the ribbon cutting at Albert & Park Street in Cannington.
Cannington's MacLeod Park
My favourite walk in Cannington starts in MacLeod Park and can go anywhere, but I will take you past some of the more interesting spots where you can rest, eat a packed snack, stop and go back or continue on...or you can always come back another day!

The Ice Fishing Chappel
Ice fishing is very popular in the winter months on Lake Simcoe. St. Paul's Anglican Church in Beaverton came up with an idea to make an ice fishing chappel in 2015.
